Desktop App Features

Pro

Use system tray controls, keyboard shortcuts, and idle detection in the Voltasis desktop app.

The Voltasis desktop app extends the web experience with native features designed for power users who track time throughout the day. These features are available on the Pro plan.

Global hotkeys

Control the timer from anywhere on your computer, even when Voltasis isn't in focus:

  • Start/Stop timer — Configurable hotkey (default: Ctrl+Shift+S / Cmd+Shift+S on macOS).
  • Quick entry — Open the quick time entry form (default: Ctrl+Shift+N / Cmd+Shift+N on macOS).

Customize hotkeys

  1. Open the desktop app.
  2. Go to Settings > Hotkeys.
  3. Click on the action and press your desired key combination.
  4. Click Save.

System tray controls

Right-click the Voltasis icon in the system tray to access:

  • Start/stop the current timer
  • View today's tracked time
  • Open the main app window
  • Quit the app

The tray icon changes to indicate when a timer is running.

Idle detection

The desktop app detects when your computer is idle (no mouse/keyboard activity) and offers to handle the idle time:

  1. When you return from being idle, a popup appears.
  2. Choose how to handle the idle period:
    • Keep — The idle time is included in the current entry.
    • Discard — The idle time is removed. The timer is adjusted.
    • Create new entry — The idle time becomes a separate entry (e.g., for a break or meeting).

Configure idle detection

  1. Go to Settings > Timer in the desktop app.
  2. Set the idle threshold (e.g., 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes).
  3. Toggle idle detection on or off.

Tip: Set the idle threshold to 5-10 minutes for accurate tracking. Longer thresholds may result in significant untracked gaps.

Startup settings

Configure the app to:

  • Launch on startup — Start the app automatically when you log into your computer.
  • Minimize to tray on close — Close the window without quitting the app.
  • Show notifications — Desktop notifications for timer events and approvals.
